Transnet announced results last week that seemed to show a better turn of fortune for South Africa’s Rail and Logistics Giant. It reported a profit of R5 billion for the year that ended in March – up from a loss of R8 billion the previous year. Transnet has been struggling to deal with rising incidents of cable theft and vandalism, and it was also recently hard-hit by an IT security breach that negatively impacted ports. Corruption and mismanagement mean that for years South Africa’s rail network has declined and been underused – with many logistics companies choosing to use more costly road transport. Well, the African Rail Industry Association says even though the results were better – they cannot hide the fact that the South African Rail Industry is in trouble. All of the major private rail operations in South Africa are members of the association, ARIA. We’re joined by the CEO Mesela Nhlapo.
